The recent Sony battery recall, which has seen Dell switch to sourcing batteries from Simplo Technology, has boosted Thinking Electronic Industrial’s thermistor shipments by 20%, according to the company.

As Simplo’s thermistor supplier, Thinking Electronic has admitted that the shift of Dell’s battery orders from Sony to Simplo has boosted the company’s shipments. A notebook battery normally requires one or two temperature-sensing resistors, and the current ratio of thermistors to Thinking Electronic’s overall revenues is 14%.

The company is now running at full utilization, with handset batteries driving most of the demand. In addition to the battery orders for notebooks, Thinking Electronic has also landed battery orders from Motorola and other handset OEMS. Monthly shipments for this segment have grown rapidly, from 13 million units in early 2006 to 33-36 million in the second half of this year.

Thinking Electronic highlighted the significance of thermistors in protecting electronic devices from over-voltage. These temperature-sensing components will shut down devices when there is an abnormal rise in temperature.
