A 22-YEAR-OLD Norwegian hacker claims to have cracked the security coding on Apple’s iTunes music store and iPod music player.

Jon Lech Johansen, who runs a software company in San Francisco called DoubleTwist Ventures, said yesterday his program would fool computers into thinking that any MP3 player was an iPod. He said it would also make any piece of music or video downloaded from the internet appear to have been bought from iTunes. (more…)

An international dispute over U.S. control of the Internet appears unlikely to be resolved even as state envoys, regulators and technology experts convene next week to discuss the network’s future.

“Such negotiations are difficult … this will take time. There are many countries which all have their own interests and opinions,” Greek Transport Minister Michalis Liapis said Thursday. “We are starting a dialogue which I think will take many years.” (more…)

AMD has completed its $5.4 billion acquisition of graphics powerhouse ATI.

The chip firm said today that it has officially merged with ATI and the two companies have already begun work on a new project scheduled to reach consumers in late 2008. (more…)

Security news October 25, 2006

Data breaches and leaks of sensitive information are becoming a heavy burden on US businesses, according to new research. The annual Ponemon Data Breach Study, carried out by the Ponemon Institute, has shown a significant increase in costs due to such breach incidents. Overall, the price for one compromised data record was set at $182, up from $138 in 2005. (more…)

OK, it’s official: With today’s release of Firefox 2, we have final shipping versions of the two biggest browsers for Windows. My colleague Erik Larkin’s extensive review of both Firefox 2 and Internet Explorer 7 has been one of the most popular stories on our site over the past week, and I’m not going to duplicate it here. But after having spent months running beta versions of both–when it comes to browsers, I’ve always been pretty transient–I do feel like thinking out loud briefly about where the browser war stands. Eight years after Congress tried to criminalize material deemed ‘’harmful to children,'’ free speech advocates and Web site publishers took their challenge of the law to trial Monday.
Salon.com, Nerve.com and other plaintiffs backed by the American Civil Liberties Union are suing over the 1998 Child Online Protection Act. They believe the law could restrict legitimate material they publish online - exposing them to fines or even jail time. (more…)
