If Google’s success has taught the marketing world anything, it’s that advertisers are just as happy creating and placing their own ads as they are paying an agency to do it, espeically if it means better targeting and greater results. Taking that lesson to heart, Interpublic Group and WPP Group have become strategic investors in Spot Runner, a startup that’s bringing automation to the high-touch, expensive world of TV advertising.

In doing so, the ad companies hope not simply to get a return on their investment, but to better serve clients with a local presence and learn the ins and outs of a platform that some say could bring Google-like efficiency and accuracy to the $74 billion TV ad market. (more…)

Orlando (FL) - Seagate today announced a first hard drive that integrates a hardware- and software-based content protection technology: Called “Drive Trust,” the security platform can prevent unauthorized access to data stored on the drive. An international dispute over U.S. control of the Internet appears unlikely to be resolved even as state envoys, regulators and technology experts convene next week to discuss the network’s future.

“Such negotiations are difficult … this will take time. There are many countries which all have their own interests and opinions,” Greek Transport Minister Michalis Liapis said Thursday. “We are starting a dialogue which I think will take many years.” (more…)

AMD has completed its $5.4 billion acquisition of graphics powerhouse ATI.

The chip firm said today that it has officially merged with ATI and the two companies have already begun work on a new project scheduled to reach consumers in late 2008. (more…)

OK, it’s official: With today’s release of Firefox 2, we have final shipping versions of the two biggest browsers for Windows. My colleague Erik Larkin’s extensive review of both Firefox 2 and Internet Explorer 7 has been one of the most popular stories on our site over the past week, and I’m not going to duplicate it here. But after having spent months running beta versions of both–when it comes to browsers, I’ve always been pretty transient–I do feel like thinking out loud briefly about where the browser war stands. Eight years after Congress tried to criminalize material deemed ‘’harmful to children,'’ free speech advocates and Web site publishers took their challenge of the law to trial Monday.
Salon.com, Nerve.com and other plaintiffs backed by the American Civil Liberties Union are suing over the 1998 Child Online Protection Act. They believe the law could restrict legitimate material they publish online - exposing them to fines or even jail time. (more…)
