Apple Computer on Wednesday began its computer recycling program, which provides U.S. customers who purchase a new Mac computer with the option of recycling their old machines, free of charge, no matter the manufacturer, according to the company’s May 31 release posted on Yahoo Finance.

If an Apple customer decides to participate in the program, the company will send an e-mail with packaging instructions and a postage-paid mailing label. All materials Apple receives from consumers will be recycled within the United States, and no dangerous components or substances will be shipped outside of North America, according to the release.

IPod users already receive 10 percent off their next iPod purchase if they choose to recycle their old device.

In addition, the company offers a drop-off recycling plan for used computers and other electronics via its Cupertino, Calif.-based headquarters.

All U.S. customers outside of Alaska and Hawaii can participate in the new program.

Since the mid-1990s, Apple has processed upward of 21 million pounds of electronics gear, according to the release.
