Six men have been charged by a Connecticut grand jury with obtaining private financial information by means of using an online scam, ID theft and financial fraud. Of the six four were from Connecticut and two from Florida. The indictment was actually returned last week, on September 20, but made public this Wednesday, after three of the men pleaded guilty. Yahoo said Thursday that it had reached a deal with Hewlett-Packard to place Yahoo search and other services on H.P. personal computers sold in the United States and Europe. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Hewlett-Packard has agreed to feature a co-branded Yahoo-H.P. Internet toolbar on its computers and to make Yahoo the default search service in Microsoft’s coming Internet Explorer 7 on some models. (more…)

Business users are being encouraged to be more cautious when opening PowerPoint files following the discovery of an as yet unpatched flaw in Microsoft’s office application.

Attackers might take advantage of the flaw to run hostile code on either Windows or Mac computers running various versions of the application. The security bug stems from an unspecified flaw in processing PowerPoint documents containing a malformed string, Secunia explains. (more…)

The number of blog sites in China reached 34 million last month, a 30-fold increase from four years ago, state media said on Tuesday, despite a series of curbs on media and dissent.

China has more than 17 million people writing blogs (short for Web logs) and more than 75 million people reading them, Xinhua news agency said. (more…)
