New virus attacks AMD processors

Security researchers at Symantec have discovered a new proof of concept virus that targets processors AMD rather than operating systems.

The worm comes in two versions, targeting 32-bit and 64-bit processors from AMD. Symantec refers to the online pests as w32.bounds and w64.bounds. Because it involves proof of concept code, both viruses are rated as low level threats. (more…)

Microsoft Corp’s Office has won a reprieve in Massachusetts after the state’s Information Technology Division bowed to accessibility concerns and delayed a move to the OpenDocument Format standard.

The ITD had originally planned to adopt ODF for all state office documents by January 2007. That date will now be the start of the ODF implementation, which will initially be enabled via Microsoft Office plug-ins, according to a letter from ITD chief information officer, Louis Gutierrez. (more…)

Bob Jones, president of Stratellite developer Sanswire Networks, said his floating platforms will carry radio equipment that uses both licensed and unlicensed airwaves. The company will license spectrum if required and also work with companies that already have licenses, he said. (more…)

At the TechEd 2006 conference held in Sydney, Australia, Microsoft senior program Steve Riley said that only 64-bit versions of Windows Vista will be able to play high-definition video content on HD DVD and Blu-ray discs. Citing the need to use signed drivers to enable playback on the next-generation drives, Microsoft says that next-generation video content will be unplayable in 32-bit versions of Windows. (more…)

Nokia Corp. and Siemens AG announced the business unit and regional leadership team for their planned Nokia Siemens Networks with the expectation that the proposed merger will be approved and begin operations by Jan. 1, 2007.

“We are making excellent progress in planning for the start of operations at Nokia Siemens Networks,” said Simon Beresford-Wylie, who will assume the position of chief executive officer of the combined company. Beresford-Wylie is currently executive vice president and general manager of Networks at Nokia. (more…)
