A new security company says it has developed a novel approach to protecting PCs from software that exploits unpatched Windows vulnerabilities.

Exploit Prevention Labs Inc., founded in 2005 by some of the same executives behind the PestPatrol antispyware product, has developed software that scans network traffic for known exploits, called zero days, which take advantage of unpatched bugs in Windows software. (more…)

To the U.S., he is a seriously dangerous man who put the nation’s security at risk by committing “the biggest military computer hack of all time.”

But Briton Gary McKinnon says he’s just an ordinary computer nerd who wanted to find out whether aliens and UFOs exist.

During his two-year quest, McKinnon broke into computers at the Pentagon, NASA and the Johnson Space Center, as well as systems used by the U.S. Army, Navy and Air Force. (more…)

Microsoft is investigating a new zero-day flaw in Internet Explorer that could put fully patched Windows systems at risk of takeover. Less serious bugs have also been reported in the Firefox and Safari browsers.

The IE bug, discovered by Michael Zalewski and posted on the full-disclosure mailing list on Sunday, could allow attackers to take over a system, Zalewski said. (more…)
