An unpatched flaw in a “widely used security program” was exploited by an unknown hacker to gain access to a Georgia Technology Authority (GTA) database containing confidential information on more than 570,000 members of the state’s pension plans.

The intrusion occurred sometime between Feb. 21 and Feb. 23 and involved a hacker who used “sophisticated hacking tools” to break through several layers of security after accessing the server hosting the database via the software flaw, said Joyce Goldberg, a GTA spokeswoman. (more…)

 Microsoft defends against EU fine

Microsoft and the European Union have begun a two-day hearing that gives the US giant its last chance to defend itself against possible daily fines.

Three Florida banks have had their Web sites compromised by hackers in an attack that security experts are calling the first of its type.

Earlier this month, attackers were able to hack servers run by the Internet service provider (ISP) that hosted the three banks’ Web sites. They then redirected traffic from the legitimate Web sites to a bogus server, designed to resemble the banking sites, according to Bob Breeden, special agent supervisor with the Florida Department of Law Enforcement’s Computer Crime Center. Apple has introduced volume controls for iPods following fears about links between personal music players and potentially irreversible hearing loss.

Yahoo Music Engine 1.1.0.3.5

The latest version of the Yahoo Music Engine (YME) has added support for iPods and new playlist features. The free download includes a variety of extra content for Yahoo subscribers, including a 7-day trial of the Yahoo Music Unlimited subscription service, but users who don’t want to create a Yahoo account still have lots of functionality, including ripping, burning, and playlist creation. The program performs very well as a music manager and player, with a few features we’d like to see added to iTunes. However, aggressive system behavior and a confusing music store prevent it from earning a top rating. (more…)

A search engine used to locate links to movie and music files has moved to dismiss legal attempts by the US film industry to sue over copyright.

Lawyers for Torrentspy say the lawsuit is an attempt to make the BitTorrent system itself illegal. (more…)
