Business software maker Oracle plans to buy G-Log, a maker of logistics and transportation management software. The deal marks Oracle’s 10th acquisition announcement in nine months.

Last week the company announced it will acquire rival Siebel Systems in a megadeal worth $5.8 billion that better positions Oracle against archrival SAP. (more…)

To reduce the confusion caused by the different names security companies give worms, viruses and other pests, the U.S Computer Emergency Readiness Team next month plans to take the wraps off the Common Malware Enumeration initiative.

The project assigns a unique identifier to a particular piece of malicious software. When included in security software, alerts and virus encyclopedia entries, this identifier should help people determine which pest is hitting their systems and whether they are protected, the initiative’s backers said. Telco giant BT is marking Grandparents Day on 24 September by asking children to become “internet rangers”.

The company believes that young people are in the best position to prevent their grandparents from becoming digitally excluded.

More and more, video game-related courses are being offered in colleges around the country in response to the digital media industry’s appetite for skilled workers and the tastes of a new generation of students raised on Game Boy and Xbox.

Animation I, Cognition & Gaming and Computer Music are being offered as part of the year-old minor in game studies at RPI, one of dozens of schools that have added courses or degree programs related to video gaming in recent years.

As Hurricane Rita’s winds whip up force off the Gulf Coast and officials continue to evacuate over a million area residents, Internet watchdogs warn another wave of chaos may not be far behind the storm.

The SANS International Storm Center today said it is now working with the US-CERT Control Systems Security Center, a department of Homeland Security program to secure national infrastructures, to help reduce Internet scamming they expect to proliferate as the storm rips ashore this weekend. RABAT, Morocco (Reuters) – A Moroccan magistrate questioned an 18-year-old science student in court on Tuesday about his alleged role in unleashing computer worms that disrupted networks across the United States last month.

Farid Essebar appeared before the investigating magistrate in Rabat for three hours of questioning about the Zotob worm, his lawyer said. (more…)
